John Stephen Hoc

John Stephen Hoc, of Garfield NJ, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 20, 2023.

John was born in Passaic General Hospital on September 16, 1939, three days before his mothers birthday. He graduated from the new Garfield High School in June of 1957. He was drafted into the US Army and served his country from May, 1962 until his honorable discharge on April 22, 1968. John retired from the United States Postal Service after a 30 year career. He was an active Free & Accepted Mason. Most recently he was a member of Genesis Lodge #88. He began his masonic service at Alexander Hamilton Lodge in Paterson NJ in 1967. John served in various positions which included Past Master and Past Grand Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of NJ. He was an active member of Holy Apostles Church of Saddle Brook, NJ where he served on the parish council. He liked to think of Father Jacob as his spiritual father and sports buddy.

John is predeceased by his wife of 16 years Mary (Vreeland) Hoc, his parents John B. Hoc and Anna (Povanda) Hoc. John's family includes his sister Carol Porter and her husband Joseph, niece Diana Porter and her husband  Paul McCarty and great-nephew Owen Archer as well as numerous cousins. 

He was a lifelong J-E-T-S season ticket holder. John truly enjoyed the years he spent with Maureen Batalias, his companion of 16 years. They enjoyed many trips and cruises in addition to their Saturday breakfasts at their favorite diners. 

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Joe and Christine Opalka for always looking out for John. In addition, John had the best neighbors ever, Patty Danis, Tommy Lopes and Joelle O’Brien. 

Funeral services from Kugler Community Home For Funerals, 311 5th Street Saddle Brook, NJ. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, September 24, 2023 from 1-3pm with OES services to begin at 2:30pm and Masonic services to begin at 3pm. A funeral service will be held at Holy Apostles Church in Saddle Brook, on Tuesday, September 26, 2023 at 10:30am with a viewing to begin at 9:30am. Interment in SS Peter and Paul Cemetery, Saddle Brook NJ.
